Episode 24:

“Do you know that you have mold here?” “And that
was not the only place where he noticed her.” It seems
that in this house with due diligence it was possible
to find all kinds of mold known to science. - And the
walls are rotten. From a financial point of view, the
most correct would be to destroy ...

Beth stumbled back from him, as if from a plague,
raising her hands in a protective gesture:

“Why am I not surprised what exactly you are telling
me about this?” But unfortunately, this house is listed
as a monument of architecture!

- And the law somehow prevents you from making
repairs and replacing rotten boards with new ones?

The comment, which Theo himself considered quite
innocent, acted on Beth like a red rag on a bull.
She gave him a look that is usually reserved for
something small and disgusting, crawling on the table.

“You just don't understand, right?”

In fact, Theo was right, and that only made Beth more
angry. Does he really think that she is pleased to see

the house, which she loves with all her heart, in such
desolation? Does he even imagine how much she pays
for electricity alone?

She looked at him, so self-confident, strong, beautiful,
and thousands of venomous cues curled in her head.
She opened her mouth to pronounce one of them,
but froze.

"What am I doing?"

She was angry with Theo, but only because he was
kind to her. A shade of shame poured down her cheeks.

Why is she still fighting for this house? When there was
at least a tiny chance that my grandmother would
return here, this was understandable, but now she
is no more. Grandma will never enter here again,
which means there is no need to fight for this place,
because it is just a building, a pile of old boards and
bricks. Now the question tormenting her last months
did not sound like “Will she sell the house?”, But like
“When will she do this?”

“Please understand me correctly.” Now, most of all I
want to be alone.

Theo hesitated for a few moments, but then nodded,
rose silently, and went out. The gaping void left after

his departure in Beth’s chest screamed that she really
wanted him to stay with her.

But Theo did not go far. Approaching the car,
he remembered that he had left a bunch of keys
on the dining table. Returning to the door, he raised
his hand to knock, and only now noticed that the lock
on it was hopelessly broken. Theo moaned, looking at
the door creaking a little on the hinges. And Beth every
night was left alone in the house, open to any robber
who considered her easy prey. A string of nightmare
paintings flashed through his head. When he first gets
to the office, he will send a repairman here to fix the
lock and even better put a new door.

Already in the corridor he heard a quiet sob. Beth sat
on the floor and wept bitterly, clutching a green wool
jacket to her chest. Now she seemed so small and
fragile that Theo's heart sank from pity overwhelming
him.

Feeling his eyes, Beth raised tearful eyes at him
and
ran her hand over his face, wiping her tears, but
this
was completely useless, since their flow did not stop.
Rising, she laid the sweater on the table.

“This is my grandmother’s favorite,” she whispered,
looking nowhere. - She still keeps her smell.

Theo thought that his heart was crushed by ice mites.
Struggling with the desire to come up and hug her,
he said:

“Smells evoke memories very easily.” Sorry, I had to
go back, I forgot the keys.

Feeling terribly stupid, Beth watched Theo put his
keys in his pocket and turn back to her. Well, why
is this particular man always witnessing her weakness?
She looked at his beautiful swarthy face and could
hardly breathe.

“Yes, you're right,” she nodded, squeezing a
semblance of a smile. - Thank you again.

At that moment, with a smile on her lips and
eyes full of tears, she seemed so fragile and
defenseless. How could he help her?

“Do you want me to call Andreas?”

She flinched at his suggestion, as if from a blow,
and anger flashed in her green eyes.

- For a second it seemed to me that you are a really
good person! How could I be such a fool? This, by the
way, was a rhetorical question, there is no need to
answer it. “Beth already knew the answer.” She
thought Theo was taking care of her, and he was
just trying to get the most out of himself and realize
his plans. “I doubt that you even consider me human.”
I'm just a pawn on your chessboard. But I don’t play
it anymore, if you need your brother’s bride, take her
from him yourself!

“I never played with you, Elizabeth.” It’s just that I still
think that you should not be left here alone.
I mentioned Andreas because I suggested that you
might like his company more than mine.

Under the calm gaze of his black eyes, Beth's anger
dissipated like smoke.

“Elizabeth, you shouldn't be alone now,” Theo repeated,
taking a step toward her.

Trying not to look him in the eye, Beth raised her hands,
as if defending herself.

“Don't, Theo, I'm fine.” Just leave and leave me

alone. Please, Theo ...

Beth finally looked up at his face and was no

longer able to look away. With a barely audible

groan, she darted toward him, overcoming the

distance separating them in one motion, rose on

tiptoe, pulled him to her and stuck into his lips

with a passionate, demanding kiss.

After a moment, she pulled away, shocked by her

act no less than he did.

She said just one word:

- Go away!

Obeying her plea, Theo went to the door,

trying to pull himself together, to restrain

the desire burning in his body. To maintain

control of herself and not to kiss her back, not

to squeeze in her arms, not to make love to her

right here, Theo took all his vaunted willpower.

Beth, clasping her hands to her chest, as if trying

to restrain her heartbreaking after him, looked

after him.

He opened the door, but on the threshold, he was

caught up with the words that he had been

waiting for.

- Do not leave! Stay!
